Barzin Mobasher ... 473 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; 1st edition (September, 2011) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1439806608 - ISBN-13: 978-1439806609 ...

Among all building materials, concrete is the most commonly used―and there is a staggering demand for it. However, as we strive to build taller structures with improved seismic resistance or durable pavement with an indefinite service life, we require materials with better performance than the conventional materials used today. Considering the enormous investment in public infrastructure and society’s need to sustain it, the need for new and innovative materials for the repair and rehabilitation of civil infrastructure becomes more evident. These improved properties may be defined in terms of carbon footprint, life-cycle cost, durability, corrosion resistance, strength, ductility, and stiffness. Addressing recent trends and future directions, Mechanics of Fiber and Textile Reinforced Cement Composites presents new opportunities for developing innovative and cost-effective materials and techniques in cement and concrete composites manufacturing, testing, and design. The book offers mathematical models, experimental results, and computational algorithms for efficient designs with fiber and textile reinforced composite systems. It explores alternative solutions using blended cements, innovative reinforcing systems, natural fibers, experimental characterization of key parameters used for design, and optimized designs. Each chapter begins with a detailed introduction, supplies a thorough overview of the existing literature, and sets forth the reasoning behind the experimentation and theory. Documenting the composite action of fibers and textiles, the book develops and explains methods for manufacturing and testing cement composites. Methods to design and analyze structures for reduced weight, increased durability, and minimization of cement use are also examined. The book demonstrates that using a higher volume fraction of fiber systems can result in composites that are quasi-elastic plastic. Speaking to the need to optimize structural performance and sustainability in construction, this comprehensive and cohesive reference requires readers to rethink the traditional design and manufacturing of reinforced concrete structures.

The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. Harvinder Singh ... 172 pages - Publisher: Springer; 1st edition (October, 2016) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 9811025061 - ISBN-13: 978-9811025068 ...

This book discusses design aspects of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) members, including the behavior of the SFRC and its modeling. It also examines the effect of various parameters governing the response of SFRC members in detail. Unlike other publications available in the form of guidelines, which mainly describe design methods based on experimental results, it describes the basic concepts and principles of designing structural members using SFRC as a structural material, predominantly subjected to flexure and shear. Although applications to special structures, such as bridges, retaining walls, tanks and silos are not specifically covered, the fundamental design concepts remain the same and can easily be extended to these elements. It introduces the principles and related theories for predicting the role of steel fibers in reinforcing concrete members concisely and logically, and presents various material models to predict the response of SFRC members in detail. These are then gradually extended to develop an analytical flexural model for the analysis and design of SFRC members. The lack of such a discussion is a major hindrance to the adoption of SFRC as a structural material in routine design practice. This book helps users appraise the role of fiber as reinforcement in concrete members used alone and/or along with conventional rebars. Applications to singly and doubly reinforced beams and slabs are illustrated with examples, using both SFRC and conventional reinforced concrete as a structural material. The influence of the addition of steel fibers on various mechanical properties of the SFRC members is discussed in detail, which is invaluable in helping designers and engineers create optimum designs. Lastly, it describes the generally accepted methods for specifying the steel fibers at the site along with the SFRC mixing methods, storage and transport and explains in detail methods to validate the adopted design. This book is useful to practicing engineers, researchers, and students.

High strength fibre composites (FRPs) have been used with civil structures since the 1980s, mostly in the repair, strengthening and retrofitting of concrete structures. This has attracted considerable research, and the industry has expanded exponentially in the last decade. Design guidelines have been developed by professional organizations in a number of countries including USA, Japan, Europe and China, but until now designers have had no publication which provides practical guidance or accessible coverage of the fundamentals. This book fills this void. It deals with the fundamentals of composites, and basic design principles, and provides step-by-step guidelines for design. Its main theme is the repair and retrofit of un-reinforced, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures using carbon, glass and other high strength fibre composites. In the case of beams, the focus is on their strengthening for flexure and shear or their stiffening. The main interest with columns is the improvement of their ductility; and both strengthening and ductility improvement of un-reinforced structures are covered. Methods for evaluating the strengthened structures are presented. Step by step procedures are set out, including flow charts, for the various structural components, and design examples and practice problems are used to illustrate. As infrastructure ages worldwide, and its demolition and replacement becomes less of an option, the need for repair and retrofit of existing facilities will increase. Besides its audience of design professionals, this book suits graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

Hota V. S. GangaRao, Narendra Taly, P. V. Vijay ... 400 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; 1st edition (November, 2006) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 0824758293 - ISBN-13: 978-0824758295 ...

Although the use of composites has increased in many industrial, commercial, medical, and defense applications, there is a lack of technical literature that examines composites in conjunction with concrete construction. Fulfilling the need for a comprehensive, explicit guide, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites presents specific information necessary for designing concrete structures with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites as a substitute for steel reinforcement and for using FRP fabrics to strengthen concrete members. In a reader-friendly, design-oriented manner, this book discusses the analysis, design, durability, and serviceability of concrete members reinforced with FRP. The authors first introduce the elements that constitute composites-the structural constituent and matrix-and discuss how composites are manufactured. Following an examination of the durability of FRP composites that contain fibers, such as glass, carbon, or aramid, the book illustrates how FRP external reinforcement systems (FRP-ER) can be used for enhancing the strength and stiffness of concrete structures using theory and design principles. The concluding chapter concentrates on serviceability aspects of concrete members internally reinforced with FRP. An excellent resource of design and construction practices, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites is a state-of-the-art reference on concrete members reinforced with FRP.

Repairing or strengthening failing metallic structures traditionally involves using bulky and heavy external steel plates that often pose their own problems. The plates are generally prone to corrosion and overall fatigue. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers, offers a great alternative for strengthening metallic structures, especially steel structures such as bridges, buildings, offshore platforms, pipelines, and crane structures. FRP-Strengthened Metallic Structures explores the behaviour and design of these structures, from basic concepts to design recommendations. It covers bond behaviour between FRP and steel, and describes improvement of fatigue performance, bending, compression, and bearing forces, strengthening of compression and steel tubular members, strengthening for enhanced fatigue and seismic performance, and strengthening against web crippling of steel sections. It also provides examples of performance improvement by FRP strengthening.
*** Summarizes worldwide research on the FRP strengthening of metallic structures * Contains several topics not generally covered in existing texts * Presents comprehensive, topical references throughout the book. The book outlines the applications, existing design guidance, and special characteristics of FRP composites within the context of their use in structural strengthening. While the major focus is on steel structures, it also describes others, such as aluminium structures. This book is suitable for structural engineers, researchers, and university students interested in the FRP strengthening technique.
