Practicing engineers in the offshore engineering industry will find in this contributed handbook practical information on current oil field production development practices for foundations and subsea flowlines. The technical challenges associated with deepwater developments have led to significant innovations. The contributors are practicing engineers and academics who have been at the forefront of offshore geotechnic development for several decades. Until the 1980s, the most common design concerns for offshore foundation and pipeline engineering were associated with extreme storm loadings, earthquakes, mudflows, fatigue, and installation activities. Engineers today face additional concerns, including: submarine slope failures, thermal buckling of pipelines, catenary riser interaction with the seafloor, vortex induced vibration of flowlines, shallow water flows encountered during drilling operations, and thermal interaction of pipelines with permafrost.

Deepwater Foundations and Pipeline Geomechanics describes recent advances in geophysical data acquisition and evaluation as they relate to offshore developments, as well as foundation and pipeline design considerations. The presentation is focused on deepwater geotechnics as well as subsea and Arctic pipeline design considerations, but engineers will find much of it applicable to other situations.

Key Features: --Describes deepwater foundation issues and the corresponding site investigation requirements --Illustrates the use of integrated geophysical studies in field architecture planning, geohazard investigations, planning geotechnical investigations and foundation selection --Demonstrates the application of centrifuge modeling techniques for soil-structure interaction and introduces the application of risk analysis to foundation design with example applications --Discusses geomaterial models and features necessary for their successful application to various foundation problems and includes illustrative examples for suction piles, flowline-soil interaction and more --WAV offers downloadable spreadsheets to calculate soil-pipe interaction responses, spreadsheets demonstrating reliability calculations, color versions of geophysical profiles, and example Abaqus analysis input files for analyzing lateral buckling of subsea flowlines.

This manual provides appropriate analytical concepts to address the principles of buried steel pipe design and attempts to correct misusage of the 1958 Modified Iowa Formula. The most current work of Dr. Reynold K. Watkins and others is presented in this book to develop the external loading design concepts provided. The goal of "Buried Flexible Steel Flexible Steel Pipe" is to offer sound information on the structural design and analysis of buried steel pipe - for water and wastewater - consistent with the latest pipe/soil design concepts of the industry. In conjunction with the external design of the pipe/soil interaction, the manual addresses internal pressure design, vacuum and external fluid pressure analysis, and many other non-standard conditions pipe designers will likely encounter. This manual will be valuable to students and professionals involved in pipe design.

Pipeline Planning and Construction Field Manual aims to guide engineers and technicians in the processes of planning, designing, and construction of a pipeline system, as well as to provide the necessary tools for cost estimations, specifications, and field maintenance. The text includes understandable pipeline schematics, tables, and DIY checklists. This source is a collaborative work of a team of experts with over 180 years of combined experience throughout the United States and other countries in pipeline planning and construction.

Comprised of 21 chapters, the book walks readers through the steps of pipeline construction and management. The comprehensive guide that this source provides enables engineers and technicians to manage routine auditing of technical work output relative to technical input and established expectations and standards, and to assess and estimate the work, including design integrity and product requirements, from its research to completion.

Design, piping, civil, mechanical, petroleum, chemical, project production and project reservoir engineers, including novices and students, will find this book invaluable for their engineering practices.
Back-of-the envelope calculations + Checklists for maintenance operations + Checklists for environmental compliance + Simulations, modeling tools and equipment design + Guide for pump and pumping station placement.

This book is a "no nonsense" guide to the principle intentions of the codes or standards and provides advice on compliance. After using this book the reader should come away with a clear understanding of how piping systems fail and what the code requires the designer, manufacturer, fabricator, supplier, erector, examiner, inspector, and owner to do to prevent such failures. The focus of the book is to enhance participants' understanding and application of the spirit of the code or standard and form a plan for compliance. The book is enhanced by a multitude of calculations to assist in problem solving, directly applying the rules and equations for specific design and operating conditions to illustrate correct applications. Each calculation is based on a specific code.
  • Written by a professional/educator with over 35 years of experience
  • Covers all major codes and standards
  • Demonstrates how the code and standard has been correctly and incorrectly applied.

The development of oil and gas fields offshore requires specialized pipeline equipment. The structures must be strong enough to with stand the harshest environments, and ensure that production is not interrupted and remains economically feasible. However, recent events in the Gulf of Mexico have placed a new importance on maintenance and reliability. A new section; Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), introduces the subject of maintenance, written by Tian Ran Lin, Queensland University of Technology, and Yong Sun, CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering. Two of the main objectives of CBM is maximizing reliability while preventing major or minor equipment malfunction and minimizing maintenance costs. In this new section, the authors deal with the multi-objective condition based maintenance optimization problem. CBM provides two major advantages: (1) an efficient approach for weighting maintenance objectives, and (2) a method for specifying physical methods for achieving those objectives. Maintenance cost and reliability objectives are calculated based on proportional hazards model and a control limit CBM replacement policy. Written primarily for engineers and management personnel working on offshore and deepwater oil and gas pipelines, this book covers the fundamentals needed to design, Install, and commission pipeline projects. This new section along with a thorough update of the existing chapters represents a 30% increase in information over the previous edition. Covers offshore maintenance and maintenance support system + Provides the fundamentals needed to design, Install, and commission pipeline project  + Methods and tools to deliver cost effective maintenance cost and system reliability
