Timber, steel, and concrete are common engineering materials used in structural design. Material choice depends upon the type of structure, availability of material, and the preference of the designer. The design practices the code requirements of each material are very different. In this updated edition, the elemental designs of individual components of each material are presented, together with theory of structures essential for the design. Numerous examples of complete structural designs have been included. A comprehensive database comprising materials properties, section properties, specifications, and design aids, has been included to make this essential reading.

This volume describes the modern data on fire behavior and fire protection of timber in outdoors and indoors application mainly in construction industry.  The book discusses the most important topics of that area of science and engineering such as: Specificity of structure and properties of  different timber species; Pyrolisis and oxidative decomposition of timber; The ignition of timber; Heat release characteristics and combustion heat of timber; Flame propagation on timber surface; Generation of smoke and toxic products at fire of timber surface; Generation of smoke and toxic products at fire of timber; Fire safety and fire resistance of timber building structures and constructions; Fire protection of timber building structures and constructions; Effect of natural aging of timber building structures on fire behavior and fire safety; The changes in fire behavior timber based on different of wood species after accelerated artificial aging. The Authors’ novel approach discovered the relationship between various species and age of timbers and its fire behavior at different thermal and fire loads. Quantitative data on ignition speed and flame propagation and generation of heat, smoke and toxic products are discussed for most types of timbers applicable in engineering practice. Analysis of fire resistance of various types of timber building materials and very new data on the effect of natural and accelerated aging of timber fire behavior are discussed. The main practical methods of fire protection of new and ancient timber structures using novel coatings (without regular fire retardants) are considered. Most of the data contained in the book are based on the authors’ research and practical experience accumulated during many years of their activity in the area. The book should be useful for a wide range of readers: chemists, physicists, material scientists, architects, engineers, constructors and restorers involved in study and practice of fire behavior and fire protection of timber.

Structural Wood Detailing in CAD Format is a reference library for wood building construction. Engineers, architects, and contractors will find the book useful for daily use and practice. It provides structural details for building, which is a major factor in building design. Using a library of standard details saves much of the engineering time and money which was spent drawing the same details many times. This structural wood detailing book covers the two most important forces: vertical and lateral forces. For each detail the lateral resistance was carefully considered. The details have been created using professional experience to maintain economical construction costs and to create safe buildings. The book is divided into three major sections -ROOF, FLOOR, and FOUNDATION. The details in each chapter are further categorized by connections. For example, in the ROOF chapter there is a set of details for rafters connected to shear walls, another set for beams connected to posts or columns, and another set for hips connected to ridge beams. This method of dividing the chapters helps the user to become easily familiar with this reference book. Some of the details are combinations of wood and steel, or wood and masonry, or wood and wood. We have provided each detail on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet. Each sheet contains the drawing itself, a description of the detail, a check list which summarizes the detail, and a small plan view which suggests the location on the structural drawing where the detail can be applied.

Wood in Construction – How to Avoid Costly Mistakes focuses on the basic principles and appropriate use of wood in construction and illustrates how to avoid or minimise problems, to ensure that wood performs as expected when used in a construction application. Based on the author’s extensive experience of manufacturing processes and practical applications in the timber, construction, joinery, shop-fitting and furniture industries, Wood in Construction provides a guide to using wood in building in the real world. It describes the main causes of difficulty when using wood, and shows how to avoid or minimise problems, reducing the difficulties for the architect, engineer or specifier, builder and building owner. Technical enough to explain why things should be done in specific ways, but also practical enough to demonstrate how to use wood correctly and avoid doing the wrong things, this is an invaluable resource for construction specifiers (architects, engineers), carpenters, structural engineers, building surveyors, small/medium sized builders.

This fourth edition of the text incorporates changes and additions to the major codes concerning the use of wood in building design. The focus of the new sections of the text will be on Allowable Stress Design (ASD). The leading wood design reference includes the latest codes and specifications. Continuing the sterling standard set by earlier editions, this indispensable reference demonstrates the best wood design procedures and techniques for safe handling of gravity and lateral loads. Thoroughly revised and updated through the 1997 Uniform Building Code and National Design Specifications, this best-seller gives practicing designers of wood structures, constructionprofessionals, and students clear step-by-step directions and illustrations for all relevant procedures. In these pages, you'll find: the latest changes to the major codes relating to the use of wood frames in building design, including the 1997 NDS and the 1997 UBC; illustrated design solutions, focusing on the latest Allowable Stress Design (ASD) methodology for timber structure design; updated information on wind and seismic loads; the latest techniques and code standards for the use of nailed and stapled connections; anchorages; and bolts, lag bolts, and timber connections; thorough analysis of thecharacteristics and design properties of glue-laminated timber and plywood; clear explanations and worked examples using near source factors and the reliability/redundancy factor. The leading reference in lateral force design, this fourth edition of Design of Wood Structures will be the sourcebook of choice for designers, engineers, architects, and other construction professionals for many years to come.
